Racing against rain - November 8, 2008

AMA District 36 round 45 was held this day on the oval track at the fairgrounds.  The track was well watered after a lot of rain last weekend that forced cancellation of round 44 at this venue. Central Valley Racing put together another prime event with a good track surface for today’s racing. In spite of the dark clouds in the sky above, practice started at 3 p.m. as scheduled. The day’s trophies were nicely displayed on the infield waiting to be claimed by the winners and “2 guys and a Dog”, a local lunch vendor, was serving the best breakfast burritos and hot dogs around.

Mike Fowler and R. Lopez battled each other through the turns of the Vintage C class but it was Fowler that crossed the finish line in front. Jon Eichelbaugh got the hole shot finishing in front of Tom Knight in the Vet 30+ A class. The Old Timer 40 and 50C classes were combined and it was Mike Fowler turning the throttle to victory. R. Lopez and Ron Kilby rounded out this podium. Jon Curry rode his way to a first place finish in the 100 combined class that included both stock and modified bikes.

Four riders lined up for the 50+A event. Tom Knight got the hole shot in front of John Larson, Bud Riddle and Ron Knight. Larson rode Knight’s back wheel for all 10 laps waiting for the opportunity that never arose. Larson a Riddle Racing rider,  finished second while birthday boy Riddle took the third place. Riddle is one of those unsung heroes in California dirt track racing building motors and helping far more riders than anyone really knows to have the opportunity to race. Riddle not only has the skill and talent to build fine bikes but he also has a fine demeanor around the track that sets an example for those around him. Happy Birthday Uncle Bud Riddle!!

Riding the Old Timer 40+ class Eichelbaugh got the hole shot and just kept going. Robert “the iceman” Curry rode a close second place while Joseph Knight finished third. Larson finished the Vintage A event first in front of Robert McDonnell.

The Open A event left the start line with Curry stalling his bike. At the restart Scott Corsetti got the hole shot off the line followed by Michael Martin and Jorge Cabrera. Corsetti maintained his front position as did Martin and Cabrera.

As the heat races ended the skies opened showering us with a light rain that became a downpour in no time. The heat races were scored as the main events. The quads followed with a mud slinging show.

Big plans are in the future for this venue with an upcoming 3/8 mile groove track, a bullring short track and other unknown surprises. Racing continues here each Saturday through the end of November with District 36 supplying turkeys for the November 29th event.   For information on upcoming Plymouth events go to www.centralvalleyracing.com.

Amador County Fairgrounds

Lewis tops the fair

Plymouth, CA – July 24, 2008

Central Valley Racing’s Mike Sikorski outdid himself tonight. Honored to promote the 1st Annual Amador County Fair Flat Track Race with the sponsorship of the Motorcycle Expo team, Mike had one hour to prepare the track when the horses were done and he did an exceptional job. Jimmy Lewis is quoted as saying “I loved the track, nothing like the last track at this venue, you could ride high, you could ride low, there were many lines to ride and it was fast”. Still a cushion track but with the entire top scraped off till he got to the hard stuff underneath, this track provided a near perfect racing surface.

There was a two and half hour window to run the races tonight and only two classes of bikes because it was entertainment for the fairgoers. The first class to wow the crowd of spectators was the Open Class. Two lines of riders left the start line in the first heat but it was Lewis that took the lead off the line. Behind him Robert the “Iceman” Curry was looking good trying to gain ground on Lewis and Jon Eichelbaugh rode the third spot start to finish. To add excitement to the racing the second heat lined up with the winners on the back row and the slower guys in front. Curry was first to turn one followed by Jorge Cabrera and Lewis. By lap four Lewis was in front with Curry and Cabrera following. Off the line in the main event Eichelbaugh led the first lap. Michael Martin quickly took the front position in lap two while Lewis was working his way around Cabrera. By the fourth lap Lewis had moved up to the second spot and was working Martin from behind. Riding wheel to wheel through the seventh lap Lewis finally powered around Martin for the front spot and the victory.

The other class of bikes that ran were the fast 50’s. DJ Skaggs dominated both heats and the main event in this class catching good air over the jumps and pulling wheelies on the straights. Mat King and Adam Knopp rounded out this podium.

In addition to the bikes an Open class of quads took to the oval racing surface. Greg Kathner could not have been any happier than he was when he crossed the finish line for the win in front of Kris Mittelstadt and Jake Litchfield.

Central Valley Racing will begin their own series at the Amador County Fairgrounds on August 23 and will have a full race program of bikes and quads on this cushion oval. Only the 50’s went over a jump today.   To fill the time and keep things moving there will be a motorcycle destruction derby at each of their upcoming events. Bring your junk and have a blast riding the destruction derby. For more information go to www.centralvalleyracing.com or call Mike at 408 590-4824.
